Vol. 8 No. 10, October 2012

Last month I had the pleasure of presenting to the Maine Submarine Veterans at a meeting and "Holland Club" ceremony to honor members qualified in submarines for fifty years. As we head closer to the 100-year mark since the chasers served in WWI, it's fascinating to speak with these submariners whose service dates back to the 1960s. Of course there were great changes both to submarine technology and ASW technology in the half decade between the end of WWI and the time when these men served, and further great changes since then. But some aspects of the service are timeless: the long tours of duty away from home, the hard work, and the danger these men faced in service to the country.

My regards to the newly inducted members of the Holland Club. Congratulations.
