Submarine chaser SC 70 was placed out of commission on 2 October, 1919, and transfered to the Coast Guard on 2 July, 2020. Later it was used as a fishing boat. Leo Byrnes, grandfather of Michael Byrnes, was captain of the Mary W in the 1930s. Michael recalls that as a boy he went out on the Mary W to fish for mackerel up the coast of the Carolinas.

Shown here is a scratch-built model of Mary W from the 1930s, which now belongs to Michaels's father, a WWI Navy veteran (who served on a 173-foot submarine chaser). Also included is a photo showing the chasers as Mary W, courtesy, Cape Ann Museum.

Thanks to Michael Byrnes for submitting the model photos to The Subchaser Archives.
