In March 1919, preparations for the expedition to Archangel, Russia, were underway. Three subchasers would be chosen for this service. The voyage to Archangel would bring the unit up the coast of Norway and over the North Cape, above the Arctic Circle. Detailed navigation instructions were circulated, indicating advisable courses and dangers to avoid.
