SC 59 - Rose Collection - 10 - SP830

Ens. Charles E. Rose Collection. Thanks to Thomas Rose for submitting the digital image to The Subchaser Archives

Patrol vessel USS Freelance (SP830), with two subchasers on the other side of the pier. The hand-written note on the face of the photograph identifies these as SC 59 and SC 63, two chasers that served along the Atlantic coast of the U.S. during the war.

The chaser closer to the cameraman appears to have just experienced a fire. Note the damage to the crow's nest canvas, and the steam and smoke. Gasoline fumes accumulating in poorly ventilated bilges in chasers resulted in numerous fires.
