When the decision was made to built a fleet of submarine chasers, speed was of the essence. The war was well underway, and the submarine menace was perhaps the greatest threat to the allies.
Standard Motor Construction Company's 220 hp open crank case gasoline engine, an existing model that could be produced at a pace to meet the schedule of construction, was chosen to be used in the chasers. There would be three engines per boat.
Standard Motor later made mention of this Navy contract in their marketing materials, of which the pages below are examples. These are the pages of a salesman's portfolio booklet on Standard's diesel engines, from sometime following the war. Page 3 includes the reference to sub chasers.
