Notes: Dole achieved the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade. As he then went on to civilian life, that is his highest rank.

The bit about being in charge of a dozen or more ships is a bit of over-statement. Initially the northern Russia contingent was expected to include 12 chasers. But it was reduced to one unit. On the return trip to the U.S. in November 1919, Lt. Dole may well have been in charge of three or four units of chasers. But during war time ops, his role was commander of a wing boat, not unit command.
