Joseph Charles Chambers was on the engineering crew of submarine chaser SC 254. He is listed with rank CMM in a muser roll dated July 1918, when SC 254 was in Bermuda, en route to Plymouth, England. He is also listed in the crew during the post-war sweeping of the North Sea mine barrage, in the book, Sweeping the North Sea Mine Barrage 1919.

According to accounts of family members, Charles Smith Chambers, the father of crewman Joseph Chambers, ran away fro updstate New York at age 14 and joined the USN.
