Submarine chaser SC 196 was built by General Shipbilding and delivered to Norfolk on 30 March 1918. During the war SC 196 was assigned to the Fifth Naval District.

This set of photographs shows SC 196 as the Mary A. Edwards in the 1950s. Howard Anderson was an engineer and sometimes-mate on the Mary A. Edwards. These photos were taken by his father.

Notes: Regarding the photo of Howard Anderson on the boat, he writes, "The location onboard is adjacent to the mizzen mast, showing the back of the wheelhouse and the engine exhaust stack over my left shoulder, to the right of the mast is the engine room 'doghouse' hatch."
